Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A symbolic stone in Channelkirk Churchyard This old stone dated 1685 is in remarkable condition. It displays emblems of mortality in the form of an hourglass and a skull with crossed femur bones. The lettering is typical of 17th century gravestone inscriptions with a dot between words. The letter U is represented by a V and the binding of two letters was common, as for example on this stone, the letters A and R in MARCH. The letter N has a reversed middle stroke, another feature of this period. The inscription reads:-

HERE LYES JOHN DEWAR HUSBAND TO ELSPET STEWART WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE THE 24 OF MARCH 1685 BEING THE 65 YEAR OF HS AGE

THER CHILDREN is inscribed below with presumably the upper case letters either side representing their names. An inscription on the other side of the stone reads:-

HERE LYES MY BONES NOW FRED FROM GROA NES WAITING THE SPRING MY SOULS ABOVE WITH CHRIST IN LOV AND THERE DOTHRING

The S in the above inscription is reversed and the T and H in DOTHRING are bound together.
