s for the color character, and of recordingthe colors for reference during succeeding generations of the birds, wasa difficult one to develop. Various schemes were contemplated andmany of these were tried. Schemes of using color tops or wheels, varioustypes of colorimeters, colored photography, and so forth, were considered, but were discarded as being too slow, expensive, or inaccurate. It is verydifficult to match the color of an egg with that of any other surface. It wasdecided that if a system of matching colors was to be followed, in orderto do the work rapidly the eggs must Jbe matched to other eggs of standardcolors. ^ By a careful inspection of all eggs produced on the plant for severaldays, a graduated set of colors containing about fifty tones from chalk-white to dark chocolate brown was obtained. The color of eggshells is not permanent and will fade considerablyif exposed to the Hght for any great length of time. The practice wastried of coating the shells, with various preparations intended to preservetheir color, but this was not successful, as all these preparations containedso much color in themselves that the color of the shells thus coated wasmaterially changed. The method finally followed was to use, as standards, eggs with the natural surface. The tray of eggs was kept covered witha black cloth except when in use, a
