The organiza-tion of this and other womens military companieswas one of the many marvels of a country in whichevery novelty was tried and heroism and cowardiceeach appeared in startling form. Kornilov Attempts Revolt. General Kornilov had fought strenuously againstthe abolishment of capital punishment in the armyand other radical measures of Kerensky as tendingto destroy all discipline. The commander put him-self in opposition to Kerensky, demanding that thelatter resign to him the entire control of the gov-ernment. The bolsheviki had grown stronger in the coun-cil of workmen and soldiers, which voted Sept. 11to support Kerensky and ordered Kornilov arrested.About the same time the German propaganda forpeace was renewed vigorously. Philipp Scheide-mann, a socialist, was chosen as leader for the effecton the Russian socialists. Scheidemann voiced ademand for peace without a knockout.

He saw it was futile to resist the bol-sheviki, with the virus of treachery to the commoncause of the Allies spreading through the ranks, andsurrendered with his army. Food Grows Scarcer. The food situation had not improved with thecoming of the revolution, but grown worse. Thelands of the rich and the nobles had been confis-cated and divided among the peasants. The newproprietors were content to farm merely a fewacres, sufficient to provide food for their own fam-ilies, as there was no adequate market in which tosell their produce, and the money offered for cropswas depreciated and depreciating paper currency,with which they could buy little. Riots broke out inthe cities and the mobs went out to the country,destroying crops for vengeance upon the peasants.The towns organized committees of workmen toconfiscate the crops. But the peasants were pre-pared, for many of them were soldiers who haddeserted and carri
