00pounds, valued at $756,626. All the indications point to a steady increase in the consumption ofnickel and give assurance that this industry will grow to much larger pro-portions. The large demand for the metal has recently raised the pricefrom 35 to 50 or 60 cents per pound. It seems probable that the greatestuse for it will be in the manufacture of nickel steel. When united with steelit forms an alloy of great strength and hardness. This alloy is used inthe making of cannon, small arms, armour plate, boilers and machinery, etc., where strength, malleability, capability to take a fine polish andfreedom from rusting are valuable properties. At present, copper is produced in Ontario chiefly as a by-product of thenickel industry. The most important copper-bearing section hitherto dis-covered extends northward from the shores of the Georgian Bay.This belt may be traced from the Parrv Sound District to LakeSuperior, adistance ot over four hundred miles in a straight line, and north- (77)

It is estimated to cover an area of 20,000square miles, and throughout this territory there is no considerable portionin which copper-bearing- rocks do not occur. Valuable veins of chalcopyrite,an ore of copper, are frequently met with, besides the nickel-copper oresalready referred to. One square mile of this country, which included theBruce mines and one or two other properties, yielded, between 1849 and1876, $3,300,000 worth of copper. Operations have been resumed at theBruce mines within the past year. The Rock Lake Company is developingsome promising properties in the same section. Near Parry Sound alsosome valuable deposits have been located and are being opened up. Theimproved methods for the mining and extraction of the ore recently intro-duced and the more favorable conditions of the market make it certain thatmany of these copper deposits can and will be worked most
