i ONTARIOS AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT Neither is there any doubt that the productive capacity of the soil might be greatly increased, by moie thorough and systematic farming-, by more ^extensive underdraining, more care in crop rotation, and by feeding more stock on the farms. Winter wheat was at one time the principal grain crop. Now it is no longer raised for export, although a considerable quantity is grown tor home use. About a million acres of land are annually devotedWheat . • to winter wheat, and the average yield is 20 bushels to the acre. Vields of thirty and forty bushels to the acre are not uncommon, where thefertility of the land has been maintained and the soil properly prepared. Ofspring wheat, between three and four hundred thousand acres are grown,and the yield averages about 16 bushels.
