Title
A single view of a Roman hair pin.
Description
English: The object is a cast copper alloy Roman pin, probably a hair pin. The pin is similar to those in Group 23 of Cools’ typology (1990 ‘Roman Metal Hair Pins from Southern Britain’ Archaeological Journal Volume 147, p. 148-182). Cool suggests a late 2nd to early 3rd century date for this Group.

The pin is incomplete, the head and a short portion of the shank remains. The break of the shank does not appear to have occurred recently. The pin head is circular in section. The upper face of the head is flat and decorated with a low-relief ‘X’. The upper portion of the pin head is decorated with a row of low-relief obliquely angled lines which are bordered above and below by a horizontal linear groove. Below this portion of the pin the head is narrowed forming a ‘) (‘ shaped profile. This waisted section of the pin sits above another block, similar to the uppermost portion of the pin. This portion tapers slightly and I decorated with a row of low-relief ‘X’s. Integral to the base of this portion of the head is the shank. The shank is oval in section, and tapers to a steady diameter of 2.28mm. The head measures 5.16mm diameter, and the object is 25.58mm long. It weighs 1.8g. The surface of the pin has a well developed dark green patina.
