Title
A single view of a Roman Aucissa brooch.
Description
English: The brooch is possibly an Aucissa type, dating to the 1st century. It is made from cast copper alloy. Hattatt (Hattat, R. 1982 Ancient and Romano-British Brooches) illustrates a similar brooch, No. 67.

The main component of the brooch remaining is the bow, the axis bar, pin and catchplate are missing. The upper edge of the bow forms a ‘U’ shape which has horizontal grooves as decoration. This edge is a broken edge, and probably originally formed a tube as wings. The slot in the edge allows for the pin to move. The bow head and upper portion of the bow is rectangular in section. In profile the bow forms a ‘C’ shape then has a vertical lower portion. This lower portion is triangular in section. There may have been decoration on the exterior surface, but this is no longer visible. The catchplate is on the reverse but is incomplete and abraded. The brooch has a patchy grey/green patina.

The brooch measures 30.22mm long and 8.64mm wide. It weighs 2.1g.
