Title

A single view of a Medieval or

Post Medieval suspension ring.
Description
English: The object is a sub-circular ring or loop, with a distinctive bi-trapezoidal section. Similar rings are illustrated in Margeson’s, (1993) Norwich Households; Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology Report No. 58. Margeson describes them as being suspension rings which were probably multi-functional, including curtain rings. The three excavated (No. 522-524) date from the mid 15th to mid 17th century. Blackmore in (1990) Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars. Royal Armouries. illustrates similar rings being used to suspend carbines from a belt, Figures 72-73. The belt would be worn across the torso so the gun hung at the wearer’s side ready for use. Carbines were carried by the cavalry (Blackmore; 52). The ring however, may not be strong enough to suspend a carbine from.

The ring is made from cast copper alloy. One portion on the interior edge appears to be worn. The ring has a mid grey/green patina. It measures 27.96mm diameter externally and 21.11mm internally. The thickness is 2.33mm. It weighs 3.2g.
