A single view of a Medieval clasp.
Description
English: The object is a component of a folding clasp, made from cast copper alloy. Egan and Pritchard illustrate a similar example, No. 568, but this example is decorated with a moulded face, whereas the recorded example is undecorated. The Egan and Pritchard example dates to the later 14th century. 

The clasp frame is sub rectangular in plan, however one terminal has an integral triangular plate. This triangular plate is flus with the frame on one face, and is slightly hollowed on the other face. The opposite edge to this plate is the ‘strap bar’. This is a sub-oval shape in section. The sides are rectangular in section and are deeper than they are wide. The frame has a dark grey matte coloured surface.



Folded around the ‘strap bar’ is a copper alloy plate, which is sub rectangular in plan, and has abraded edges. The plate has a dark green shiny patina.
The object weighs 2.41g and measures 33.9mm long and 12.7mm wide.
