Title
A silver Roman denarius coin of Mark Anthony, 32-31 BC
Description
English: A silver Roman denarius coin of Mark Anthony, 32-31BC. Obverse: ANT. AVG (above), […] (below) and ship right. Reverse: Aquilia between two standards, LEG […]. It weighs 1.80g and has a die axis of 6. It is in a poor condition. Crawford, M, H. Roman Republican Coinage, page 544, ref. 13-. This coin is part of a hoard of 5 Roman denarii coins, Object IDs ESS106093, ESS109370, ESS10C6B4, ESS10E334 and ESS10F9E3. The group would appear to represent at least part of an early denarius hoard of the mid-first century AD. Such hoards have been considered recently by Orna-Ornstein who notes a concentration in the eastern counties of England, especially Norfolk and Suffolk. It is generally believed that these hoards were deposited at the time of the Boudican revolt of AD 61/2. Given the proximity of Mersea Island to the colonia of Colchester sacked during the uprising it is certainly a possible explanation in this case. Orma-Ornstein, J. ‘Early Hoards of Denarii from Britain’, in Coin Hoards from Roman Britain, Volume X, pages 23-9, figure 1.
