Drakes Golden HindIn this he sailed round the world, 1577-1580. Plymouth, but Drakes own ship alone saw the western coast ofSouth America. Having secured vast plunder on the Peruviancoast and fearing to return through the Straits of Magellan, hecontinued his journey northward to Vancouvers Island. Fromthis point he struck westward across the Pacific, and after manydangerous adventures returned to England by way of the Capeof Good Hope. He arrived in England at a time when thenation was in great fear of impending war with Spain; and itwas Drakes bold protest and advice that prevented the privycouncil from agreeing to a humiliating treaty with Philip II.The queen rewarded the great captain with the honors ofknighthood and 10,000 pounds of the plundered bullion. 1 Cheyney, No. 229; Innes, I, 344-351.
