Edmonstone, 206 MR. brotherstons plantation. seated in old Glens hut. He was glad to seeme again, and, after he had taken farewell,as if certain that he should never more beholdhis dear friend the colonel, we returned to thesettlement. On the 17th of April, by daylight, we werein the governors boat and steering for theDemerara. On entering the Mibiri, we foundthe stream strong in our favour, and, soonreaching the Waratalla creek, and runningdown it, we got into the Camona creek, andafterwards to the Demerara. We now turnedour head up this stream, and, as the tide wasslack, our Negroes contrived to pull us well.About two in the afternoon, we landed im-mediately under the sand-clifF, above whichwas situated the plantation of Mr. Brother-ston. Next morning,the 18th of April, as he recommended me towalk higher up over the sand-hills, where Ishould have an extensive view, I rose early,and started, as usual, with my gun and sketch-book, taking with me my black friend, Dick,one of our boatmen. After a long and ratherfatiguing walk over loose sand, we at lengthreached a most singular tree, its seeds, inbrown pods, being suspended from its boughsby fibres resembling threads, three, and someof them four, feet in length. The view from this spot was extensive,looking down the Demerara, and, like all theother scenes in this country, wood and watercomposed the whole of the scenery. I desiredDick to knock me down one of the curiouspods from the tree just mentioned, and I foundit to resemble, in appearance, the locust-bean,which grows in Spain, but in taste not nearso good as the Spanish production.
