seen a human being, bounded up the oppositebank, and, on gaining its top, stood, turnedround, and looked baek at me. It exactlyresembled some of those beautiful animals Ihad seen in parks in Great Britain: its colourwas red, spotted on the sides with white; ithad no antlers ; and it soon bounded off to re-join its companions, without my firing at it>owing to its distance. The track turned to the left, and, followingit for some time, I arrived at a beautifulrising ground, covered with all sorts of foresttrees. About half-way up it I observed amiserable hut, which I concluded must be theone I was in search of. As I came nearer toit, I found it open on all sides, covered only bythe thatch ; I soon discovered the hard plankand Bible, but no Glen was to be seen ; and Ihad time to examine his dwelling, which Isupposed must have been an exact copy of thefirst dwelling built by the first man on thisearth. OLD glens hut. 195 floor: a black earthen pot used by the Indianswas on the outside, with a few smoking sticksunder it, and two or three Indian necklaceshung from the beam over head. There wasnot another article, that I could see, in thisdwelling. O that some of our youths, sick ofthe profusion and luxury in which they havebeen brought up in England, could be trans-ported for one year to this old mans habita-tion in South America! I took the Bible on my knee, and foundthat it naturally opened at Proverbs; and,looking, saw in the 13th chapter the follow-ing verses : verse 7th, There is that makethhimself rich, yet hath nothing. There is thatmaketh himself poor, yet hath great riches:and verse 11th, Wealth gotten by vanityshall be diminished, but he that gathereth bylabour shall increase. This page had beenwell thumbed by the old man. Within the hutwas the stillness of the wilderness.
