Description
English: A RARE SAFAVID POTTERY TOMBSTONE TILE

SAFAVID IRAN, DATED AH 1056/1646-47 AD

Of rectangular form with triangular top, inscribed with four lines of black nasta'liq script, each within a black cartouche on white ground, the tympanun decorated with a painted pottery candlestick, topped with a face, cypresses to the sides between floral garlands 14 x 10in. (35.5 x 25.5cm.)

The inscriptions comprise a couplet from the Bustan of Sa'di, a couplet from Asrarnama of 'Attar followed by death of the Sayyada Salih Begum Aqanah, daughter of Ghulam 'Ali 'Arabi at the dawn of the blessed month of shab'an [1] 056/August 1646 AD.
