The tiles in thisdesign are of uniform pattern throughout, and differ fromthose in Figs. 48 and 49 in having a cell or hollow in itsunder side in the one on which the iron girder is placed.This is intended to serve as a conduit for water, and whenso supplied from the main is at all times available in case offire. Between each tile facilities are afforded for laying orplacing iron or other pipes intended for warming or anyrequired purpose. An arrangement of this kind possessesmany advantages, not the least being the ease with which,during a fire, water may be intercepted and controlled, thuslimiting the damage to the floor in which it occurs. Fig. 51 illustrates another adaptation in a cheaper form offloor, having smaller girders and the tiles or tubes withcurved top surfaces.
