neous manner, the tile isthroughout its whole thickness uniform in shade. Fig. 44 represents the centre panel of the frieze, ofelaborate design and successful execution. The character of this carefully designed and substantiallybuilt structure was altogether pleasing, and the effect ofits graceful parts was considerably heightened by the bril-liant colouring of the window frames and balcony, the formerhaving been gilt and the latter painted of a cream colour. It will be as well to describe the mode of fixing the thinred tiles. On the wooden structure are fixed concrete slabs3 feet by 2 feet, 1 inch thick, with screws in the ordinaryway. On these carefully fastened slabs the courses areaccurately lined, and the final or ornamental coveringfastened thereto with Portland cement, the result being anaccurate external surface superior to any attainable throughthe agency of rubbed brick or terra-cotta. The reason ofthis perfection is easily understood when the processesemployed are examined.

This latter distinguishing mark was themore remarkable owing to the small number selected forsuch honour.
