Although Maine was settled byEuropeans several years before anyother part of New Ens^land, it wasnot admitted into the Union as a stateuntil 1820. Previously to that peri-od it was a mere territory of Massa-chusetts, and long bore the title ofthe district of Maine. In pointof extent, however, and rapidity ofgrowth, it ranks at the head of theeastern states ; embracing, betweenits distant limits of Lower Canadaon the north. New Brunswick on theeast, the Atlantic on the south, andNew Hampshire on the west, an areaof 33,223 square miles.A considerable part of the northwestern division of the state is mountainous,and there are rough tracts and peaks of considerable elevation in some otherparts ; but in the north the surface is generally even, although the height is con-siderable, dividing the waters of the St. Lawrence from those emptying into theocean.
