ll room cutin two by the Avail of a passageleading from the church to thesacristy contains remains of afresco representing the vision ofthe Archangel to the Pope Gre-gory on the mole of Adrian atRome, which has since been calledfrom this miracle the Castle ofS. Angelo, and scenes from thelife of S. Egidius. 3 Especially the vision. 4 The Virgin sits with a book,Gabriel on one knee with armscrossed on his breast. The spirit of the Holy Ghost and the formof the infant Saviour descend asif from the Eternal in the lunetteabove, now obliterated. A Virgin giving the*breast to the infant Saviour (half figures)known as the Madonna del Latteand executed for the church ofS. Stefano fuor dArezzo is nowin S. Bernardo, where of old wereother works by Spinello. (Vas.Vol. II. p. 190 and 193.) On thefacade of the ex-hospital of Spi-rito Santo, he painted the descentof the Holy Spirit, three scenesfrom the legend of S.S. Cosmoand Damian, a Noli me tangereof which the remains are now allbut obliterated.

Chap. I. SPINELLO OF AREZZO. 11 ability in rendering sweep of drapery are illustrated inS. Domenico of Arezzo, where an altar to the left ofthe portal is decorated with the majestic erect forms ofS.S. James and Philip, between side panels representingscenes from the lives of these saints.1 Vasari justly praises another of Spinellos frescos inArezzo, a tabernacle above the door leading into the Com-pagnia della Misericordia.2 The colossal Trinity depictedthere, although repainted in its lower half, is worthy ofdistinct attention.3 The head of the Eternal, of a fineand powerful type, a well proportioned figure of the Re-deemer, not without religious feeling, impart to the wholesubject a certain grandeur, whilst the general effect isheightened by vigorous colour. A virgin between S.S. James and Anthony assigned to the master in the company of the Purraciuoli at Arezzo, bears the date of 1377 and might prove, if the frescobe authentic, that Spinello was still at the time in hisnative city.newhistoryofpain02crow
