Aberford is 114 miles from London, and dands on thegreat Roman caufeway, which, all the way to Cadleford-bri ge, appears as entire as when fird made, though it is near1600 years old. Under the town runs the river Cock, and nearit may be feen the foundation of an old fort, called Cadle-cary.Here was formerly a priory. North Allerton is 223 miles from London, and is focalled to diftinguifh it from feveral other towns in this countyof the fame name. Pontefract is 175 miles from London, and is a neatbuilt town, not far from the river Are, and its conflux with theCalder.. In the ruinous caftle is ftill to be feen the place wherethe collegiate church of St. Clement flood. The floor, walls,and roof are of one kind of ftone, dug out of the rock. Itwas built by Kildebert Lacy, in the reign of William the Con-queror, and demolifhed immediately after the cataftrophe of kingCharles the Firft.
