ennsylvania. T?ie Battle of Assunpink was fought ashort time after that of Trenton. Wash-ington, finding the enemy did not ad-vance, again crossed the Delaware, andtook post on the south bank of Assun-pink creek. On the 2d of January, fouror five thousand British troops marchedfrom Princeton to attack him. The en-emy made three charges upon the bridge,but were repulsed by his cannon, withabout 150 killed. When night came on,Washington, knowing his force quite in-sufficient, ordered the camp-fires to bewell fed, and drew off his forces with solittle noise that the enemy did notknow of their disappearance. Washing-ton reached Princeton in the morning,which was occupied by a large Britishforce. There are several handsomehouses, with gardens and yards arrangedwith taste ; but the college-green, withits several buildings, is the principal or-nament. In the rear of it, but frontingon the street, is Nassau hall, the oldestcollege-building, which has a venerableappearance.
