n miles from Wil-liamsburg, is now a deserted spot, con-taining only a few remains of its ancientimportance. It is truly an interestingplace, as the fiist ground occupied by apermanent colony within the boundariesof the country, and the scene of theprincipal events, before mentioned, con-nected with the early settlement. James city was one of the eight origi-nal shires into which Virginia was di-vided in 1634, and is twenty-three mileslong by about eight miles wide, beingbounded on the north and south by Yorkand James rivers. The population atthe last census was 1,325 whites, 1,947slaves, 507 free colored persons—in all,3,779. Jamestown is the spot which was oc-cupied by Captain John Smith and hiscompanions, and is a point of land be-longing to the tract that extends intoJames river. The current is graduallywearing away the land. The only re-mains are the stone tower of an old,ruinous church, of unknown date, andthe churchyard. The edificeof which the remains are now to beseen, must have been of a later date, andmay have been the second which, as welearn from Smiths journal, was in Iuinsin 1617. If so, the venerable remainsrepresented in the cut must be two hun-dred and thirty years old. This vicinity is also remarkable forthe invasion of Arnold, January 3, 1781,and for two actions fought here betweenGeneral La Fayette and the troops ofCorawallis, June 25 and July 8, 1781.
