Title
A near complete copper alloy rotary key of probable medieval date (c. 1150-1400AD).
Description
English: An almost complete copper alloy rotary key of probable Medieval date (c.1150-1400AD).

The key has a flat, quatrefoil bow which has four circular perforations and slight grooves forming definition of the petals. At the centre is a smaller circular perforation. The bow has a tubular projection (perhaps a suspension loop) on the top lobe.  This projection is decorated with two circumferential parallel grooves.

The stem is attached to the bottom lobe. There is a double moulded band or collar at the junction between stem and bow. The stem is circular in cross-section and hollow.

The bit is sub-rectangular in shape and cross-section with 3 wards (or cuts) – one on the side and two parallel to the stem – all of which are decorated with grooves that run parallel to the stem.

The key has a mid green patina.  There are two small chips missing from the top of the tubular projection and damage along the length of the stem, which could be mis-casting.

Length: 107.0mm; width of bow: 35.1mm; thickness of bow: 6.5mm; diameter of tubular projection: 19.0mm; height of tubular projection: 13.5mm; diameter of stem: 10.1mm; weight: 86.6g.
