Description
English: At neurula stages the entire placode territory is specified as lens (blue). Initially Fgfs from the anterior neural ridge, the future hindbrain and the mesoderm underlying the otic placode (not indicated in the diagram) repress lens specification. Fgf8 is also expressed in the future mid-hindbrain boundary, however a role in lens suppression and trigeminal placode specification has not yet been shown (empty arrow). Neural crest cells come to underlie most of the facial ectoderm and are potent lens suppressors (purple arrows).
