Title |
a medieval shield shaped harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy, medieval, shield shaped harness pendant dating from AD1300-1450. The shield carries the device of a lion rampant. The body of the lion bears traces of silver gilt; the field has traces of blue enamel. This can be described as "azure, a lion rampant argent". The remains of a suspension loop are in place in the centre of the upper edge of the shield, at ninety degrees to the main body of the pendant; the upper part of the loop has broken away and is missing. The pendant has a rough, dark brown patina. It is 31.5mm long, 21.3mm wide and 2.6mm thick. It weighs 3.66gm. For reference, see London Museum, Medieval Catalogue, page 118. The owner suggests that the arms are those of John Colvyle, listed as such in Foster's Heraldry. |
