Title |
a medieval, shield-shaped harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy, medieval, shield shaped harness pendant dating from AD1300-1450. The pendant is unusual in having a design on both faces. On one face, the shield carries the device of a band running from the top left to the bottom right of the shield, separated from the rest of the shield by a ridge and groove on either side, and bearing three reversed crescents. This can be described as "on a bend cotised, three crescents". The owner suggests that these arms may belong to the de Ryther or Elmeden families, listed in Foster's Heraldry as "argent, on a bend azure three crescents or" and "argent, on a bend sable three crescents of the first" respectively. Huxley (Ermine a bend cotised gules with three crescents or on the bend) would seem to be another possibility (Victoria County History of Bedford, Eaton Bray).
On the other face, the design is less distinct. It is a band across the centre of the shield with two motifs above and one below. These have been identified by the owner as pierced cinquefoils. They could be the arms of the Lamoys or Olzeton families, described in "Anglo-Norman Armory" by Cecil R Humphery-Smith as "Sable, a fess between three pierced cinquefoils argent" and "Or, a fess vert between three pierced cinquefoil gules" respectively. There is a suspension loop in place in the centre of the upper edge of the shield and at ninety degrees to the main body of the pendant. The pendant has a dark brown patina. It is 44.9mm long, 28.1mm wide and 5mm thick. It weighs 8.26gm. For reference, see London Museum, Medieval Catalogue, page 118. |
