INTRODUCTION—SCREW ENGINES. ll years the millwright was an important functionary in a marine-engine shop,especially where repairs were executed. No doubt, it is owing to theseconsiderations that the paddle-wheel so long maintained its position; tliemachinery of a screw ship was as heavy as that of a paddle-wheel ship ; itoccupied more space, and the wear and tear was much heavier, while thebelief in the power of the visible wheel was far more sincere than that inthe invisible screw, and it required the experiment of the Alecto andRattler to convince wavering minds. It is not necessary here to go intoany detail as to the early forms of screw engine, as they are now extinct,and the interest attaching to them is purely historical. It is, therefore,only to show the genesis of the marine engine, and to account for certainsurvivals, which will be noted further on, that the subject has beenentered upon here at all.
