ntly tight to put the rudder hardover at full-speed trials ; but the springs in any case have not sufficient force to holdthe connection tight enough to cause fracture of any part of the machinery. In theevent of a heavy sea striking the rudder, it immediately slips, allo-\ving the rudder tomove out of position ; but by that act the steam valve is opened and the engines bringthe rudder back to its normal place. As the steam tiller is intended to work (and inmost cases has been so fitted) on the open deck, without any house, the whole of themachinery is placed in a water-tight casing, which forms the framework of the steeringengines, access to whi5h is got by the doors, 0 0. The oiling of the various parts isefiected automatically by two valveless oil pumps, P P, driven off the valve rods of theengine. These throw the oil from a well in the bottom of the casing through the hollowpiston-rod into the reservoir, Q, and from there a copious supply of oil is supplied to browns steering gear

In actual practice the oil isrenewed once in three months, about 2 gallons being required. The pinion end of the tiller is cai-ried up by gun-metal slippers and spiral springsunder the lugs, R R, which are capable of adjustment. As there is always a tendencyof the tiller or quadrant to shake or chatter when there is no strain on, the rudder beingfore and aft, the slippers in that position work upon inclined planes, S S, which givessufficient brake action to prevent any vibration. At the same time, when putting thehelm over to such an exte it that the pinion bears hard on the rack, the slippers rundown on to the flat part of the toothed segment, when the springs slack off and onlycarry up the weight of that end of the tiller. The hand gear consists of a strong standard, T, bolted to the deck, and carrying anexactly similar
