Let us stand near this little park a moment arid recall the timewhen the Dutch traders landed on the island. How beautiful thisplace must have been then! Standing -in this field we admire thepretty flowers and the beautiful trees. We watch the traders andthe Indians, and wonder how they can buy and sell when they donot understand each others language. How wonderful to thinkthat this fur trading was the beginning of our great commerce withthe world! In a few years a settlement grew up around The Plaine, as itwas called. On the south could be seen Fort Amsterdam and theroofs of the buildings inside; to the north, the top of the high citywall could be seen through the trees. The Plaine was a paradeground for the soldiers, a bowling green for the fathers, a play-ground for the children, a market place for the farmers, and thefair grounds for cattle shows. In
