Besides the large parks in the city there are many small parks,squares, gores, playgrounds, parkways, and recreation piers. Publiccomfort and health are also provided for by public baths along ourriver front and in other parts of the city. Ocean beaches are beingacquired by the city authorities for seaside parks. Some of the small parks are of historic interest, and are so wellknown that we ought to learn something about them even if theyare not located in the borough in which we live. PARKS 89 Battery Park. Battery Park is nearly all made land. The building now usedas an aquarium is- one of the oldest and best known buildings inour city. It was once a fort, and the spot on which it stands wasonce an island. The fort was changed into a place of amusementand was called Castle Garden.
