It is praiseworthy as being among the firstlegislative acts in favor of anything like toleration. It wasrestricted toleration, however, not religious freedom, forsevere penalties were prescribed against all persons guiltyof blasphemy, or denying the divinity of Christ, or using re-proachful words against the Virgin Mary or the Apostles ; butit does not appear that these punishments were ever inflicted.This act simply changed what had been a custom into a law.
