who servedin the Revolutionary War. Jared Ingersoll was asigner of the Constitution of the United States, and,with Charles Pettit, who lies in the next vault, attainedprominence as a jurist. Beneath the shade of the hollyhocks which beautifythis portion of the churchyard is an imposing vault,whose recently recut inscription reads: Sacred to the Memory of Major David Lenox, of the Revo-lutionary army, who died April 10, 1828, aged 74 years. ThePresidencies of the Pennsylvania Society of the Cincinnati and ofthe Bank of the United States were testimonials to the high senseentertained of his gallant bearing as a soldier and of his dis-tinguished virtues as a citizen. Generous, sincere and affectionatein the relations of domestic life; brave and intrepid in the field,he closed a long and honourable career in the care of his familyand friends and in the distinguished regard of his country. About sixty feet west of the church stands the mostimposing monument of the First Church section. It

MONUMENT TO CHARLES ROSSCaptain of the First City Troop West Side The Churchyard and Its Dead. 321 is surrounded by an iron fence of good proportions,and marks the resting-place of Charles Ross, a formercaptain of the First City Troop of Philadelphia, whoserved with honor in the War of 1812. A troopershelmet, crossed sabres, and a wreath, all of bronze, andsaid to be the first bronze castings made in America,adorn it, and have stood well the eighty years sincethey were placed there. The inscriptions on the foursides of the monument are worth recording: This Monument is erected by the Members of the FirstTroop, Philadelphia City Cavalry, friends and associates oftheir late Commander, Charles Ross, of which Troop he was amember 23 years and Captain 6 years.
