One of the Cannon taken at theBattle of Bennington THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION 107 latter. The beginning of his invasion produced greatexcitement, and this increased with every advancingstep of the army. As he passed through the lake thesettlers along the shore withdrew toward the south,and by the time hewas on the HudsonRiver there were fewfarms north of thepresent county ofBennington whichwere occupied bytheir owners. The British had anotion that as soon astheir army had occu-pied the country theinhabitants of thisstate would flock tothe royal standard.Burgoyne attemptedto hasten this muchdesired end by issuinga proclamation whichbreathed out threat-enings and slaughteragainst those who clung to the American cause but prom-ised protection to those who should join him or remainquietly at home. But the Green Mountain Boys flockedto other standards than his, and by the time he wrotefrom his camp near Saratoga to Lord Germaine, Burgoynehimself was fully aware of the temper of the people.

Indian scouting parties not infrequentlyput in an unwelcome appearance in the neighborhood offrontier towns. Although they rarely molested theinhabitants, their presence was a menace totally destruc-tive to peace of mind. The British control of LakeChamplain placed the western borders at the mercy oftheir Indian allies if they chose to reap the harvest. A few instances will illustrate the prevailing con-ditions. Weybridge was settled in 1775, in almostunbroken forest, by settlers who came up the creek inboats and located on the banks. The little settlementwas visited in 1778 by Indians and Tories, the propertydestroyed, and the people taken as prisoners to Quebec.Occasionally on similar raids the women and childrenwere left behind in a condition worse than captivity;for they had no protection from the wild beasts, no shel-te
