Lamarsprivate yacht—she was chartered by aparty of Noi-thern men to make a cruise.She returned to Savannah loaded withAfrican slaves, was captured, con-demned and sold. Her owner, Lamar,was exonerated from all blame, butlost his yacht. The Northern men whomade the cruise escaped to New York.This is the nearest the South everbecame interested in slave trade.Most of these Africans were seized andreturned to their country. That stout, jolly gentleman waslater a captain under Forrest. Hismemory will abide principally be-cause he was Henry W. Gradys uncle—Henry A. Gartrell. The brown-eyed gentleman withblack hair and moustache—so erect incarriage—and earnest in manner, wasthe first Mayor of Rome (the onlypublic office he ever held—except theConfederate marshalship of Georgia).He was appointed Colonel of a regi-ment of a Partisan Rangers, but wasinduced to resign it and head the com- 260 A History of Rome and Floyd County
