theNorth for whom Floyd Countycitizens kept peeled an eager eye.The Courier of Aug. 30, 1860, stat-ed that a correspondent of The Sa-vannah News, writing inider dateof Aug. 10 from the SteamshipMontgomery, declared a man onboard by the name of John Owens,of Erie County, N. Y., who had beenputting up lightning rods in Geor-gia and West Florida, had assertedthat John Brown died in a goodcause, and he (Owens) would bewilling to lay down his life for thesame; also that he announced hisintention of returning to the South. Last year a man by the nameof Owens, selling patent lightningrods, passed through this countyand met with considerable success,continued The Courier. He hadmuch to say against abolitionists,which was a suspicious circum-stance. Let us be on the watch forhim, and when he returns, have aninvestigation. LaFayette,who pronounced her the prettiest young lady he had seen in America. She lies buried inthe Cave Spring cemetery. A Lincoln defeat was seen byThe Courier of Thursday, Sept. 1,1860: Lincolns Defeat Certain.—Hereto-fore we had little hope that the BlackRepublican candidate could be defeat-ed. With the opponents of that partydivided and belligerent we saw no pos-sible chance to avoid the disgi-ace of aBlack Republican Administration. Butour fears have vanished, for the defeatof Lincoln is now fixed. The Rome Light Guards receivedtheir caps by July 4, 1860, and bySept. 22, 1860, one of the brilliantsample uniforms appeared.
