land, and along thecontinent occurs about Labrador, Baffins Bay, and HudsonsBay, and so on to the United States, Mainland, and otherparts. They have been seen on the shores of Dorsetshire, Hamp-shire, Devonshire, Durham, Northumberland, the Fern Islandsin former years, though their visits there now would seem tobe few and far between, and other parts of the country. These birds are obtained on the Yorkshire coast, but notplentifully; about the year 1816, Arthur Strickland, Esq. shotone out of a small flock in the height of the breeding-season,near the rocks off Flamborough Head. In Cornwall, thebird has occurred at Gwyllyn Vase, but is rare. This bird is strong and able on the wing, flying at a lowelevation; so it is also, in its way, in diving, using its pinionsbelow the surface, as if in flight in the air. The BlackGuillemot, says Macgillivray, sits lightly on the water, paddlesabout in a very lively manner, dives with rapidity, openingits wings a little like the other species, and moves underwater with great speed.
