This species, *La Petite Hirondelle-de-Mer, is common onthe coast of Norfolk. In the county of York, specimenshave been procured near Huddersfield, at Ecclesfield, nearSheffield, and not unfrequently near Barnsley; also, naturallyon the coast. In Cornwall, one was obtained at MountsBay, April IGth., 1852. They have been likewise noticedon the coasts of Essex and Suffolk. It occurs at uncertain intervals, as I have been informedby Mr. Thomas Thorncroft, in the neighbourhood of Shore-ham; two were shot by him there in May, 1850; seven oreight appeared in May, 1853, near Brighthampton, Oxford-shire; others near Oxford, two April 23rd,, 1853. LESSEE, tee:?^. 45 male, at March, the 7th. of May, 1850. In Surrey, somehave occurred at Frensham Pond, near Grodalming. It is seen in Ireland on different parts of the coast. In Scotland, as far as Aberdeen. In Orkney it is notuncommon. The Lesser Tern breeds on the Northumbrian coast, nearlyopposite to Holy Island. So too in Kent, about YanletIslet, on the Thames; in Lincolnshire, at Skegness; and onthe Cumberland coast; on the Solvvay Frith Skinburness isa station; also in Scotland, upon Guillon Point, above NorthBerwick, on the Frith of Forth. These birds are found both inland, by the sides of lakesand rivers, and along the sea-coast, frequenting low gravellyand sandy shores. They arrive early in May, and depart towards the end ofAugust. The migratory journey is performed, it is said, inpairs or small parties, and that both by day and night,high in the air. They are sociable among themselves, and not shy unlessalarmed.
