( 39 ) INTRODUCTION. TOPOGRAPHY. Rome is situated nearly in the centreof the Campagna, that undulatingtract of territory which lies betweenthe Sabine Apennines, the Latin andCiminian ranges of volcanic hills, andthe Tyrrhenian Sea. Its geographicalposition, at the Observatory of theCollegio Eomano, is lat. 41° 53 52 N.,long. 12° 28 40 E. of Greenwich ;and its height above the sea on themean level of the Tiber under thePonte S. Angelo, 20 ft. It is 13 geog.m. distant in a straight line from thenearest point of the sea-coast. On the left bank of the Tiber arethe Seven Hills, at a height varyingfrom 120 to 180 ft. above the river.They are the Palatine, the Aventine,the Capitoline, the Esquiline, theCaelian (monies), and the Quirinaland Viminal (colics). The Palatinewas inhabited before the supposed eraof Romulus (B.C. 753); and theCapitoline was occupied by theSabines.
