Tollesbury untilthe year 1858. When Graves published the 2nd edition of hisBritish Ornithology in 1821, he wrote: TheBearded Titmouse is found in considerable abun-dance in the extensive tracts of reedland from Wool-wich to Erith in Kent, and is occasionally seen inthe like situation in various places adjacent toLondon. We have found it, he says, on theside of the Surrey Canal on Sydenham Common, also on the roadside leading from Bermondsey toDeptford, called Blue Anchor Lane, and have seenit in numbers about Erith. From all these locali-ties it has long since disappeared. In Sussex, Montagu met with it amongst thereed beds near Winchelsea, and Borrer procuredspecimens from Amberley and Lancing. In Devon-shire, Topsham and Thorverton, on the Exe, wereformerly localities for this bird, and it has been metwith on the Fleet at Abbotsbury, Dorsetshire, as wellas accidentally in Cornwall. In a state of freedom it feeds on insects, smallthin-shelled mollusca, and the seeds of the reed. Itssingular, tinkling notes may be well imitated bybalancing a penny on the middle finger of each handand striking the edges together. Fam. AMPELIDiE. WAXWING. Ampelis garrulus, Linnseus. It was particularly numerous in thewinters of 1830-31, 1834-35, 1849-50, 1866-67,1872-73. Although more frequently met with inthe north and east, it has been observed in almostevery county in England to the south and south-west ; but it is of very rare occurrence in Ireland.
