The knowledge of perspective, like everything elsein which science can render assistance to Art, will be oflittle use unless constantly under the direction of taste.Much of the impression of a picture depends on thechoice of the horizontal line. It was a remark ofStothard that grandeur might be obtained either by avery high or a very low horizon; but when the horizonis placed in or near the middle of the picture, grandeurof composition must be sought from some other prin-ciple. In many of his own pictures we have fineexamples of the advantage of a high horizon, andTitians Peter Martyr affords a noble instance of thegrandeur of a low one; indeed, Titians compositionsof the Death of Abel, Abraham and Isaac, and* David and Goliath, owe much of their impressivenessto the horizon being below the boundary of the pic-ture.
