Description

Information on this photograph online appears to be almost non-existent but there are bits and pieces in the photograph we can see. All men appear to have Chonmage, a form of traditional topknot haircut most commonly associated with the Edo period and samurai. It’s also apparent with the men being armed with Katanas and Wakizashi that these are in fact samurai. Most of the men are dressed in what seems to be Yukata, casual summer clothing. While others dress in more western looking clothing, most notable being the man with the red vest. The man sitting furthest to the left has a Jingasa “war hat” in his hand, commonly worn by samurai and ashigaru (foot soldiers employed by the samurai class). The men appear to be having their photo taken in some kind of garden with a Kasuga-dōrō behind the men on the left. A stone lantern which is very common at both temples and shrines.

This photograph was taken either 2 or 1 year before the Boshin war, sometimes known as the Japanese Revolution, which was a civil war in Japan, fought from 1868 to 1869 between forces of the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and those seeking to return political power to the Imperial Court. The war found its origins in dissatisfaction among many nobles and young samurai with the shogunate's handling of foreigners following the opening of Japan during the prior decade. Maybe these men were among those frustrated at the Shogun or maybe they stood at his side? Who can really tell?
