The third church was organ-ized May 12, 1660, and its building, known as the Old South, was nosTox. 183 first occupied for religious services on April 26, 1730. The societynow has, instead, a beautiful church edifice on the corner of Boyl-ston and Dartmouth streets, known as the New Old South. The first Baptist church was organized in Charlestown May 28,1665, when Rev. Thomas Gould was chosen pastor. After variouslocations it erected a fine house of worship on Somerset Street,Beacon Hill, whose tall spire was a landmark for many years. TheJacob Sleeper Hall of Boston University occupies its site, thesociety having, in 1877, united with the Shawmut Avenue BaptistChurch, which was organized in 1856.
