Summary[edit]
DescriptionA fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra).jpg |
English: The fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is one of the largest representatives of the clade Caudata, which includes tail-bearing amphibians. Its distribution range covers almost the entire territory of Europe. This species prefers forest habitats and is mainly found in river valleys, mountain slopes, and may also extend beyond the forest, for example, to mountain meadows. It leads a crepuscular-nocturnal way of life.
Despite being listed as "least concern" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, in some countries (such as Ukraine), the fire salamander is considered a rare and vulnerable species. The particularity of this photo lies in capturing a fire salamander in an atypical location for this species (an asphalted street in Yaremche, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine) and at an atypical time of day (05:50 pm in the third decade of May – when the sun is still quite high above the horizon). |
