As there is no special term, other than nave,for the central and highest part of the choir orchancel, or of the transept, when there are aislesto such part of the church, we may say, thenave and aisles of the choir. Tliis is strictly inaccordance with definition B, above, but it israrely used, and a circumlocution replaces it.(Compare Clearstory, which is the uppermostpart (Etage) of the nave in sense B for choir andtransept as well as for the nave in sense A. — R. S. NECK. A part of a column considered asinterposed between the spreailing or ornamentalpart of the capital and the shaft. This issometimes enclosed between two neck mould-ings and may even receive a separate decoration. NECKING. A. Same as Neck. B. A moulding or group of mouldingsseparating the capital from the sliaft.
