Docks.—Bombay is the only port of consequencein British India in which the rise and fall of thetide are so considerable as to admit of the forma-tion of extensive wet docks. At ordinary springtides the rise is about 14 feet, but occasionally ashigh as 17. The capacious docks constructed bythe East India Company are their property, andare for the most part under the direction ofParsees, who, excepting the Chinese, are the mostindustrious and intelligent people of the East.Merchant vessels of the largest class, or from1.300 to 1,400 tons burden, for the cotton trade toChina, have been built in these docks. The timberhaving to be brought from a great distance, shipsbuilt at Bombay are very costly; but being, con-trary to the practice in other parts of India, en-tirely constructed of teak, the) are the mostdurable vessels in the world, requiring little re-pair, and often running 50 or 60 years. Being forthe most part built by natives, without any verystrict application of the rules of art, they are com-monly, though not always, heavy sailers. The Bombay port establishment, under Act I.of 1859, consists of the shipping master, a deputy,an accountant, a master attendant and conser-vator of the port, with 2 assistants, and 17 pilots.
