thefouth eaft of the county, is thirty-fix miles fouth-weft of Monm.outh, and 163 Vv^eft of London. Itsname fignifies a city on the TafF, it being thuscalled from its iituation on that river. It is apretty large well built town, efteemed the hand-ibmeft in all South Wales. It is feated in a rich andfertile foil, proper for corn and pafture; the groundabout it is level ; but at the diftance of three or fourmiles, it is furrounded with pleafant hills, thatyield a delightful profpe61:. There is a hand-iom.e bridge over the river TafF, to which veffelsof fmall burthen may come up ; and a commo-dious harbour, by which the inhabitants carry ona good trade to Briftol, and other places. Thehoufes are well built, and the ftreets clean and ingood order. The town confifts of two parifhes,though at prefent it has but one church ; for theother, above a hundred years ago, was undermin-ed by the river, and the greateft part of it felldown. This caftle, together with the walls, was builtby Robert Fitz Haimon, a Norman, about theyear iioo, who held here his courts of juftice, andkept a ftrong garrlfon, his twelve peers or knightsbeing obliged to defend their feveral ftations. Inthis caftle Robert Curthofe, eldeft fon of Williamthe Conqueror, was imprifoned by his brotherstill his old age, having firft been deprived of hiseyes, as well as of his hopes of the crown. Itwas taken by Maelgon, and Rhys Gryg, withprince Llewellyns forces, in 1131. It is now alordfhip, belonging to the right honourable thelord vifcount Windfor. The town is an ancient corporation, governedby a conftable, two bailiirs, twelve aldermen,twelve capital burgelfes, a fteward, a town-clerk,and other officers. This being the county-town,^ court of record is held here every fortnight, ofwhich the bailiffs,
