This city consists of two parts,the one containing about 12 sq. ni., being thenorthern or Tartar city, including the imperialpalace and the government buildings ; and theother, called the southern or outer city, beingoccupied by the Chinese. The walls arc 30feet high, 25 thick at the base, and 12 at thetop, being surmounted with a parapet, and sur-rounded with a ditch.
