Title |
A copper alloy Limoges altar cross fitting |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy and enamel casket or altar cross fitting dating to the twelfth or thirteenth centuries AD. The style and decoration of the fitting is characteristic of ecclesiastical metalwork produced at Limoges, France in the medieval period. The fitting is hemispherical and hollow in section. There are two circular perforations in the body of the fitting. It is in the shape of a robed saint and appears to have been originally gilded. Small fragments of gilding are visible on the neck and face of the fitting. The fitting is also decorated with enamel. The folds of the saint's clothes are picked out with triangular and rectangular cells. Some contain remnants of red enamel. The head of the saint is oval and solid in section. The eyes are picked out as dark blue glass or enamel. The surface of the fitting is degraded and very corroded in places. It measures 65mm in length and 25mm in width. |
