If you look out of window into a street, you maysee a number of figures on the sidewalks. You re-ceive a general impression of figures, moving orstanding still; some men, some women, representingvarious spots of one color. ISTow a realistic paintermight say, Each one of those figures represents areal person; I will paint him as he really is; and, todo so, will ask him to stand still long enough for meto study him exactly in all his visible details.
