The girl sits more to the right andfarther back ; she wears a white cap, a black and yellow bodice, anda blue skirt. In her right hand she holds a wine-glass ; her lefthand rests on the table. To the left is a window, with one case-ment open. On the wall hangs a Map of Holland and WestFriesland. Referred to by Burger in an article on Van der Meer de Delft published in the Gazette des Beaux Arts, 1866, vol. xxi. p. 462, and on p. 548,where it is No. 7 in the Catalogue RaisonyiL Canvas. 19 in. x 17 in. HerJr\. plain widows gown is nearly black. ; she wears a close blackcap, which descends in a point on the forehead, and on which isa dark brooch ; she wears also a wide, double-pleated white rulf.The cheeks are sunken and the face wrinkled and withered withage, but the dark eyes retain their brilliancy, and the expressionis full of shrewdness and vivacity. Dark background, rich in tone. The extraordinary truth of life, the decision of forms, the depth andtransparency of the golden tone, and the certainty and breadth of the spiritedtreatment, assign to this picture a distinguished place among the portraits ofRembrandt.—Waagen : Treasures of Art in Great Britain^ vol. iv. p. 135.The picture is also referred to by Waagen, op. cit., vol. iii. p. 27.
