To the right is Mary Magdalenestanding in a paroxysm of grief with tears in her eyes, and holdingher right hand to her head ; behind her is one of the Holy Womenholding the crown of thorns. To the left is the Virgin supportedby St. John, and behind them is another of the Marys. Gold back-ground and a feigned framework ot Gothic foliage. Wood. 29 in. X 18^ in. 75HUBERT VAN EYCK: 1366(?).1426 Early Flemish SchoolTHE HOLY WOMEN AT THE SEPULCHRE IN the centre is the empty tomb of Christ ; an angel in whiterobes, with a golden sceptre in his left hand and parti-colouredwings, is seated on the displaced cover lying slantwise across thetomb. On the left, the Virgin with the two Marys, bearing jarsof ointment ; to the right and in the foreground the three sleepingguards. In the middle distance a green mound, probably represent-ing the Mount of Olives, and a winding road on which horsemenare returning to Jerusalem. Right and left are cliffs of brown rock.Across the background the houses and towers of Jerusalem, a con-spicuous object in the midst being the Mosque of Omar, intendedfor the Temple. Towards the left snow-capped mountains beyondrise to the sky. In the foreground we liiul the palmetto and othersub-tropical plants.
